Method

Dry Ingredients

1. Mix the dry ingredients together

  • Weigh the bicarbonate of soda, kaolin clay and SLSA.
  • Do not add the citric acid to this stage.
  • Mix these ingredients together until fully combined.
Split The Dry Mixture

2. Split the mixture

  • Split this mixture into three bowls.
  • Weigh out each mica powder colour separately.
  • Add the yellow mica powder to one bowl, add the orange to another bowl and add the red mica to the last bowl.
  • Mix the mica powders into their dry mixture.
Wet Ingredients And Dry Ingredients Combined

3. Add the wet ingredients

  • In a separate bowl, measure the apricot kernel oil, essential oils, polysorbate 80 and water.
  • Pour a third of the mixture into each bowl with dry ingredients.
  • Mix the dry and wet ingredients together and make sure everything is evenly distributed and combined.
Citric Acid

4. Add the citric acid

  • Weigh out the citric and add a third to each mixture.
  • Ensure this is thoroughly mixed in.
Testing Each Mixture

5. Test for moulding

  • Take a small amount of the mixture and squeeze it all together. Do this for all three mixtures.
  • It should hold together well and be a similar texture to damp sand.
  • If the mixture is crumbling, you will need to add some more water (make sure not to add too much water as this may cause the citric acid to activate and make the bath bomb stick to the mould).
  • We would recommend adding the extra water with a spray bottle to make sure there isn't too much liquid added. Starting with 2 sprays and adding more if necessary.
Filling The Moulds

6. Fill your moulds

  • First, take your red mixture and fill one half of the mould half way. Gently pat it down.
  • Next, take your orange mixture and fill the same mould up to the top with orange. Pat the mixture down. Make sure it is filled slightly over the top line to help the two halves stick.
  • In the other mould, fill it halfway with the yellow mixture and gently pat it down.
  • Then, fill that one to the top with orange. Again, make sure to pat it down and fill it so it is slightly over the top line.
  • Press the two halves together and then leave to set for 30 minutes.
  • You can either make each layer flat for a stripy look, or make each layer slightly curved to make a wavy look.
Finished Bonfire Night Bath Bombs

7. Unmould the bath bombs

  • Unmoulding the bath bombs can be a bit difficult the first few times.
  • Lightly tap the mould with a spoon and try to gently remove one half of the mould.
  • Once you have unmoulded half of the bath bomb, leave this to dry for around an hour.
  • After it has dried, turn the bath bomb and lightly tap the other half of the mould. Gently remove the mould and leave to dry again.
  • If your bath bomb has stuck to part of the mould, this may mean there was too much water in the mixture or the citric acid has started to activate in the mould.
